Honours Research Project: Arpeggio
2019

This interactive sound installation is an outcome of my honours research project, in which I spent a year exploring tangible environments and different modes of interpersonal communication.

The installation consists of multiple interactive soft tubes, interweaving to form a web-like sculpture that manipulate sound when they are moved by people. Conceived as being installed in a public area, passersby are invited to interact with the tubes haptically, or by walking through them. Tugging or poking around of the tubes to set off a soundscape is a fun and unique experience for the users to bond over.

The work is an attempt to embody an alternative channel for self-expression and aims to create an additional layer of a playful somatic interaction in social situations. By allowing users to be expressive and have effects on the environment through haptic, spatial and sonic interactions, it hopes to provide an experience which adds depth to interpersonal interaction. Being an initial conception and response to my research, this installation can be developed further to be a haptic room-sized instrument.
